I went to go to a nearby coffee shop. It's a bit far to walk, so I drove.
On the way there you have to turn left. As I approached the light was green, so I waited for the traffic to clear and made my left turn as the light was about to turn yellow.
And that's when I noticed the separate left turn signal, predictably on red.
D'oh.

Even better when you make a yielding technically legal left hand turn on flashing yellow or solid green, only to find a wild pedestrian has appeared, but you've already began the turn and are now blocking oncoming traffic, and you get the stink eye from everyone at the intersection

I make left turns at intersections with a dedicated left turn light all the time, even after the left turn phase ends and on the regular lights either green or yellow . Why not?
one of these?

Either you're confused, or you like running red lights.
This wasn't a scenario where an advance green arrow goes, and then the main light goes green. In that case what I did would be fine.
The left turns at this intersection have their own dedicated lights, you're only supposed to turn on your dedicated green, not when they're red.

Lots of places have a seperate signal for the left turn lane only. Miss that, and you have to wait for the next light cycle. VERY annoying.

I've done that. It's an extremely d'uh moment.

Oh I see what you mean. Sorry forgot bigger intersections have lights for left lanes.

And usually the left turn cycle is short and you get to wait like 3 or 4 lights. YAYYYYYY!
